Biography
Slovenian tenor Žiga Čopi is gaining recognition for the elegance of his timbre and the expressive clarity of his artistry.In the 2024/25 season, his projects included the recording of Alessandro Scarlatti’s Humanità e Lucifero with Academia Montis Regalis and Chiara Cattani (issued in the July 2025 edition of Amadeus Magazine), followed by performances of J.S. Bach’s Johannes-Passion. He then appeared in Finland in a programme of Mozart arias and duets with Kymi Sinfonietta under Topi Lehtipuu, and joined Accademia Hermans and Fabio Ciofini for a four-concert Italian tour of Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang. The summer culminated in his debut at the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music with Accademia Bizantina under Ottavio Dantone, a collaboration that continues in the coming season.His upcoming engagements include his role debut as Oronte in Händel’s Alcina at the Teatro Alighieri in Ravenna (November 2025), and the tenor solo in Händel’s Messiah, also in Ravenna, both under Ottavio Dantone with Accademia Bizantina.Previous appearances have included Eurimaco in Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, the Spirit in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas (Ravenna), and San Giovanni in Händel’s La Resurrezione in Finland.A frequent prize-winner, he was most recently awarded First Prize with a perfect score at the 54th TEMSIG National Competition (2025), adding to earlier distinctions at the 51st TEMSIG, the Split International Competition Daleki akordi (2024), and SPEVslam (2024). His academic achievements were further recognised with the Škerjanec Prize (2023).Žiga studied with Edita Garčević Koželj at the Ljubljana Conservatory of Music and is a current artist of the Firenze Mascarade Opera’s Talent Pathway (2024/25) in Florence.As a composer, Žiga’s works have been performed in Germany, Austria, Italy, and Slovenia by renowned ensembles such as Airborne Extended and Ensemble Modern. He has started his composition studies with Professor Uroš Rojkoand is currently completing them with Professor Vito Žuraj at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana.He has benefited from the guidance of Ottavio Dantone, Topi Lehtipuu, Delphine Galou, Hermine Haselböck, Katherine Haataja, Snežana Stamenković, Izabela Kłosińska, James Platt, and Dearbhla Collins... He remains actively involved with the ENOA network, continues to collaborate with the Operosa Opera Festival and is increasingly in demand across Europe’s early-music scene.
